Discussion:
Tenor status?

Hi everyone!

By now, I read some articles about what Tenor is going to be to KDE 4, but
aside from the many third-party comments, I haven't seen any official project
page or a paper that describes *how* Tenor will work. I think that for such a
project, that forms the very basis on which the user will operate with his
files, there should be more information for people who want to participate.

So... can anyone tell me what Tenor is today? Someone told me, that everything
that needs to be thought *before* writing the first line of code has already
been done, like how data is stored, what meta-information is collected about
files, where contextual linkage comes into play and so on. I'd be happy about
a status report of Tenor, how people can contribute and maybe a sketch of how
things are actually supposed to work at all.

Bye
Tobias

The lack of buzz lately is intentional, actually and for the most part for the
relatively near future I'd like for it to stay that way. I've been quietly
working on it again for the last 6 weeks or so but I don't really have any
interest in dealing with the hype and expectations again right now; that was
a contributing factor to some of my loss of interest many months ago.

So, current status:

- I'm coding on stuff (mostly in local CVS)
- I don't make any guarantees on when or what will shape up
- I'll make some noise again when it's ready for playing with
- I'd prefer if others keep the speculation to a minimum

I don't mean to sound negative, but I don't want the hype to get ahead of the
code again. Kevin says this makes me sound cave-man-ish, and well, he's
probably right. Sometimes that's just the way I like to work. ;-)

Nice to hear.

Would you be interested to make part of Tenor the a KDE Google Summer of Code
project and mentoring this?

This will be the Summer of Moving for me and probably also the Summer of a
Couple Months Without Internet, so it's not really an option for me.

Scott, I've read your recent blog entry on Planet KDE about your Tenor
development where you emphasize that KDE development is a hobby for you and
you don't know whether you will get Tenor ready for KDE 4. Well, I think
that - if your code is still "mostly in local CVS" - you should consider
publishing what you have achieved so far, into KDE Subversion archive or
whatever. I really appreciate your work, but I think it's maybe better for
the project if the community can also contribute to it, for - in my opinion -
Tenor should become a core component of KDE 4 and needs to be developed with
appropriate efforts.
